Youth Athletic Development MUST HAVES!

Training youth athletes is not a job that should be taken lightly. We are training the athletes of the future and they are putting they’re trusting their future performance in our our hands. So we need to do it right.

There’s 3 things that I think are essential to good athletic development:

  1. Movement competency: learning how to move, and move well. especially during the developmental years of puberty, limbs growing here and there.

  2. Base Strength: building a sound foundation to build upon for years to come.

  3. Landing & Jumping Mechanics: move well, be strong enough to move external weight and your own bodyweight, now we need to make sure we are absorbing and expressing force in the right way.

Physical activity vs exercise

You may not think there’s a difference, but there is.

Walking the dog is not the same as counting reps in the gym.

Training for a long distance event is not the same as playing some friendly social basketball.

It’s not a bad thing, it’s just important to know if you’re on a fitness journey and important for goal setting.

Further Education - Invest in yourself

As if studying for 5 years for 2 degrees (small flex) wasn’t enough, I’ve recently joined a mentorship to further my education beyond University. Why? Because why not?

This weeks blog I talk a bit about investing, the value of investing in yourself, and signing up for the mentorship.

Zenia is the owner and director at Swift Movement Academy and has invested a good part of her working career investing in her own personal and business growth that has paid dividends to her and her business. I don’t know about you, but since leaving University, it has showed me that what I learnt in there, has very little application in the real world, and that getting the piece of paper at the end, wasn’t the end after all, but the beginning.

NORDIC HAMSTRING TEMPLATE

Hamstring injuries can be a burden for average Joe’s and Jan'e’s, and critical for athletes. It’s not enough to do basic hamstring curls on the machine and a couple of stretches to strengthen such an important muscles group.

Take a tip from me and have a read of this blog. It’ll tell you all you need to know about Nordic curls and the program you can use to develop and strengthen you hamstrings to be bulletproof.

Jack of All trades, Master of None.

Something that I look for when I first walk into a new gym, is the staff profiles. What does each trainer do, specialise in and who are their main clients?

This is my little opinion piece on what I think about specialisation and what exactly you should look for to get the best results for what you want.
